This week is turning out to be a real test of the whole "work hard, play hard" philosophy.  This is the last week of classes before exams start next week so there's a whole ton of studying I should be doing, and kinda am. Then also because it's the end of the term, there's also a whole bunch of socials, like last cell group meeting (translation: we go to East Side's and gorge ourselves on half-price appetizers), last bridging-meal-of-the-term, last house gathering... oy... i hope i can concentrate enough to study.. haha

Okay this posting is totally opposite in nature to the one yesterday. This is completely dedicated to all the tv fans of Alias and One Tree Hill (Fi, Bern, Charita, etc.) that read this page. It's COMPLETELY SPOILER-ISH though so if you don't want it spoiled don't read this.... But I got so excited when I found out from Kristin on E Online that I had to tell someone...

On Alias, Vaughn is going to get suspicious of Lauren after Jack and Sydney tell him of their suspicions that he bugs their bedroom and finds out. And later on in the season, I"m thinking season finale, Lauren and Sark kidnap Vaughn and torture and brainwash him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the next episode of One Tree Hill, they have a bachelor's auction. Brooke buys Mouth, Haley gets Lucas and Peyton and Nathan get together. And Nathan and Peyton kiss!!! I can't believe it! And Nathan was finally beginning to lose his jerk status!

ARGHHH! All this good tv coming up and I've got exams and training and another term! I think my VCR is going to have to put in some overtime....

Hahahaha... okay I got that out of my system - back to the books...

Yesterday I was just reflecting upon all the of news/events that have happened in my life, the lives of my friends and family, and even in the lives of those I've only read about in the news over the past weekend, week, month, term ... well you know what I mean... it's been filled with a whole smorgasbord of good, bad, happy, sad, silly, stressful, miraculous, etc.. While I do believe everything generally happens for a reason, I can't say that I understand why all these events have happened - perhaps some but not all. Their purpose may be revealed to me at some time in the future and or not ever at all. What I do know though is that as crazy or illogical or difficult as it may be, He should be thanked for all of it.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

Set your sights on Him and everything else will fall into place. I wouldn't ever want to know life without Him.

For our last assignment, my classmate and I had to come up with a tax problem to solve. The original problem we were given wasn't complicated enough so we had to make some additions. This is the result; it's what happens when you mix tv and tax. See if you can pick out the tv references. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it; you may need some geeky humour to fully appreciate it though. (Oh btw, and if you can solve the problems, lv ur answer too.)

Mr. Big the taxpayer started his career in property management, but later changed professions and became a business professor. He has been teaching at OC University for the past 15 years. Mr. Big purchases land with two existing dwellings by the lake in January 2003. He took out a substantial mortgage to finance the purchase of the property. His initial intention was to demolish both properties to build his dream home for his wife, Carrie. However marital difficulties arose when his wife discovered he had an an affair with her sister, Hailey. The construction of the house was put on hold, while he tried to woo his wife back. As his wife had quite a temper, he knew that it would take a while to atone for his sin.

His mortgage interest payments were quite high and rather than leaving the properties idle, he decided to rent them out. At the time, the rental market was doing well and based on his projections, it appeared he would earn a profit. He relied on the word of mouth of his students to advertise his rental properties. However, during the first five months there were no prospective tenants. After several reductions in his rent, he finally managed to find a tenant for unit one and his cousin moved into the second unit. He gave his cousin a 5% discount on rent in exchange for groundskeeping services on both properties.

In August, his cousin, a professional exorcist, moved out after receiving a job offer in Salem. Mr. Big continued to rely on word of mouth to find a new tenant, however, he was unsuccessful. The tenant in the first unit was a smoker and in September, he left a lit cigarette, resulting in a house fire. The tenant was evicted as a result of his negligence. There was substantial damages to the home requiring major renovations to make it livable. Rather then renovating the house, the taxpayer decided to tear down the first unit because he thought the second rental unit would be more marketable with a larger yard, and would provide a better view of the lake. Moreover, tearing the first unit down would save him trouble in the future as he still intended to build his dream house.

In December 2003 his plans for his dream home were finalized and he began construction. Nearing the completion of the construction, he received divorce papers from his wife. He was distraught by the news, however he allowed the construction to be completed. He moved into the home for a week but found no joy in living alone. In January 2004, he rented the house to a visiting professor for three months. After the professor's term was completed, Mr. Big decided to sell his home.

During the period where the properties were rented out, Mr. Big experienced losses in both units. Rental losses were incurred, where mortgage interest, demolition costs and property taxes were major contributors to the loss. Moreover, the rent charged in reality were lower than his initial projections. In computing income tax, he deducted all of his expenses.

It is now July 2004 and Mr. Big has received a Notice of Assessment from the Minister. The Minister deemed his expenses as to be capital in nature. Mr. Big comes to your firm for tax advice and the tax partner has asked you, CA, to advise of all the tax implications.

Top Three Things I've Learned This (4-Day) Weekend

  1. Watching too many chick flicks within a short period of time can be bad for your mental health. (I have to admit though that Chasing Liberty is quite good, not to mention Matthew Goode)
  2. Don't procrastinate - or you'll end up frittering away a weekend and staying up til 3AM the night before doing something you could have finished 3 days ago. (Note: this is a lesson that keeps repeating itself; apparently, I haven't mastered it yet.)
  3. Pay attention - or else you'll end up staying up til 3AM stressing out doing something that you think is due but actually is not due for two more days!!!

Went to a friend's house last night for hot pot.. (yum.. had itis after for awhile). After hanging out til half past midnight, we called it a night and I headed home with a friend, stopping at her place to pick up some stuff. During our walk though, I came up with the "brilliant" idea of scaring yet another friend who lived nearby, by knocking on her window, peering through her curtains, and basically scaring the heebie jeebies out of her. We'd heard of how she liked to scare her roommates so we figured she could take a scare or two...

Literally right after my friend and I decided to put my idea into action, I realized that I had lost my keys and cell phone somewhere during our walk. So we had to retrace our steps...across the parking lot, down the hill, across more parking lots, through the hole in the fence and into the backyard...needless to say it was an eventful journey. I ended up finding my stuff but by then my friend and I felt duly chastised for our mischievious plans ...talk about "what goes around comes around"...the timing was way too much of a coincidence not to have been considered as some sort of sign...So to my friend who we had been planning to scare - a set of keys and a cell phone saved you from a mild heart attack last night...

I don't know what is more frustrating and a bigger inducement for hair-pulling: Reading the Income Tax Act or Reading tax court cases...

While I was cooking dinner today, my housemate watched CBC Newsworld, as he always does...and I heard this story come on about how ppl in Quebec are suing the Bay cuz they say that they're credit card interest rate is too high and it's "unfair" www.cbc.ca/stories/2000/03/08/consumers/baycredit000308 ....... I can't believe this is a serious lawsuit! Am I missing something? Cuz if I am then please tell me. To me, it's just pay your credit cards on time. Or if for some reason you're not capable of spending within your own financial limits, then use a credit card that has a lower interest rate! And if you can't get approved for one of these lower interest cards, then surely that must tell you something about yourself... sigh... the world gets crazier an crazier...

it's snowing again here... my housemate (one different from the aforementioned one) is the only person I know who LOVED finding out it was snowing on Sunday. She was absolutely giddy - the rest of us thought she was crazy. Then she told me why, she said that everytime she looks outside whenever it snows, it reminds her of purity, and Jesus's sacrifice for us. That shut the rest of us up pretty fast...... I guess it really is all about perspective....

Hey Mel/Bren, here's something to look forward to - a couple of meals for the past couple days:

Considering all of it was made from scratch (well the eel was frozen and defrosted) - not bad, you think?

This is dedicated once again to my dad who doesn't believe that TV is educational.

Top 5 Life Lessons From Watching The Apprentice (So Far)

  1. Always stand up for yourself
  2. Be Loyal
  3. Don't let your emotions rule you - unless it's in matters of the heart
  4. Don't make excuses
  5. Believe in what you're doing (or in TA case, what you're selling) or you won't do well

Wow… I’m coming dangerously close to becoming one of those ppl I’m always harping on to update their blog…hahaha... I promised that I’d update this at least once a week though so here I am…Oh yes and note the colour change… that was done for my more elderly readers who were blinded by the turquoise – or so I’ve been told.

The past week has been busy (oh! except for when I got to have lunch with Na! )… 1 group of computer viruses (thanks to my cousin Grace), 3 presentations, 2 assignments, 1 forty percent midterm and all on top of the normal weekly cases, quizzes, readings, etc... sigh… even though a large part of the stress is most likely self-induced, I’m so glad that it’s over…time to breathe… well just a little…I can’t believe that there’s only one more month of school left… it’s nice in some ways that time is flying by so quickly but it’s also scary because that means the UFE is coming closer and my life as I’ve always known it (i.e. the student life) is about to come to an end and the rest of my life, reality, is about to begin… it’s scary and exciting all at the same time, y’know?

I went home this past weekend to watch The Passion of the Christ. Now take note cuz this next part is something that's important to me.

Going into this movie, I would say that I had more of a serious attitude. It didn’t feel like I was just going to see another movie. It was almost like knowing I was going to witness something important. And in a way it was, because His sacrifice goes to the very core of who I am. Going in, I was also certain of two things: 1. that it would be gory (after reading/hearing about it in the news); and 2. that I would cry (I cry in normal movies that are complete fiction, so crying here was pretty much a given). After watching it, I can confirm that yes it was gory and yes I did cry. (There were also a few minor things that threw me too but that’s another convo). The torture that He endures will either make you cry or physically sick. So if you are the squeamish type (*ahem* Fi), I’m not so sure you should watch this (I can hear your whimpering already ) I didn’t turn away really but with every whip, strike & nail, I flinched…it wasn’t just the physical torture, but the emotional torture too, the ridicule, the betrayal… The whole entire time I was watching the movie the one thing that kept going through my head was “He did this for you … He did this for you … He did this for you” I did cry watching Him endure so much pain for me but I think I wasn’t so much sad as I was ...... moved. The movie left me stunned and yet at the same time in a whirlwind of emotions for the rest of the weekend: sad, awed, unworthy, grateful, honoured, etc..... I know the story of His crucifixion well but I think sometimes I’ve gotten complacent and forgotten about the enormity of his sacrifice – not in my head, but in my heart.

Now that I’ve had time to reflect upon it more and listen to others’ reactions and experiences, all I have to say is that I am so grateful to not only know about Him but to know Him also.
